In one of the biggest home break-ins in Los Angeles this year, a thief made off with about $2-million US worth of jewelry and other valuables from a BREAK IN AT PARIS HILTON's HOME Friday. PARIS HILTON, 27, was not at home when the break-in occurred.

PARIS HILTON's 7,500-square-foot mansion in Los Angeles' Sherman Oaks neighbourhood is equipped with a security system, and the gated community has its own security force. A security guard reported the robbery, telling police the burglar wore a hooded sweat shirt and gloves, and entered the house through the front door.

According to the Los Angeles Times, city police believe the thief may be familiar with the house and the neighbourhood. The thief doesn't appear to be a professional burglar, the newspaper added, and investigators do not believe the incident is connected to a string of burglaries at the homes of celebrities in the city.

PARIS HILTON bought her home last year for more than $5 million US. In October, she took talk show host Ellen Degeneres on a televised tour of the property.

In 2004, several thousand dollars' worth of jewelry and money was stolen from a home Hilton shared with her sister, Nicky Hilton.

As far as I can tell, Paris Hilton's most impressive quality is that she is a genius of self-promotion. It's a shame she doesn't use her formidable publicity skills for a good cause. Why are people so obsessed with this woman? What has she done? What important contribution has she made to society?

But anyone with just a scintilla of wisdom and maturity understands that Paris Hilton represents the very worst of modern American culture. Brittany was named Hilton's BFF on the finale of Tuesday's My New BFF "reality" show on MTV.

Paris Hilton has gone on television to find not just a new best friend but a new best friend forever. Tuesday night, MTV premiered its latest reality series, Paris Hilton's My New BFF, in which 18 complete strangers vie to fill that empty spot in Paris' life.

There are some kinds of celebrity that are apparently immune to scandal — neither sex tapes, nor jail time, nor a catalog of youthful indiscretions posted permanently on the Internet have significantly sullied the star's reputation or made her less of a figure of fandom. This is because she seems really, really nice.

Although not even Paris thinks her life is hard ("I feel very blessed," she told David Letterman recently), it's not as if she doesn't do anything: Looking totally hot all the time takes effort and expertise. (She looks totally hot even in her LAPD booking photograph.) And she earns money, too, millions every year — she's affixed her brand to perfumes, jewelry and hair extensions. Her 2006 CD, Paris, is not the worst ever made by a person not otherwise known as a singer.

It's my own inclination, too, to give her the benefit of the doubt. I would like to think she's as sharp as whoever wrote the words she hilariously speaks in the announcement of her mock presidential candidacy. ("I'm not from the olden days, and I'm not for change like that other guy.") From out here, however, it's difficult to discover anything of substance about her — it's all parties, promotions and the increasingly rare bit of damage control. But she seems, you know, nice.

Her show is not always as nice. In the first "challenge," blindfolded contestants were nastily interrogated by Jeff Beacher, a Las Vegas impresario, as Paris and boyfriend Benji Madden looked on. "Do you think you're hot?" "Are your breasts real?" "How many guys have you slept with?" ("Tonight?" one girl asked back.) "Would you die for Paris?" There is only one right answer to that question, and it isn't the one they were after.

The contestants represent a cross-section of types and styles and backgrounds, none as fabulous as Paris'. What they share primarily are a kind of mystical belief in the star and the hope that her reflected glory might make their own glory apparent. (And, of course, "reality-show star" has for a generation become — and I am amazed by this, really — a potential career, rather than just a mad detour on the way to real life.) They will be judged on taste, class, "business savvy," ability to party, realness, devotion to Paris — "and, of course, they'll have to be hot."

Some seem sweet; some are just annoying. ("Is it mostly losers, right?" Letterman asked her.) In the way of these things, they are all shut up together in a kind of Barbie Dream House by way of Candy Spelling. Players include the androgynous Onch, who feels he represents "the best of both worlds, an amazing girlfriend and an amazing boyfriend"; the self-loving Kiki, who says people hate her because "I'm pretty and nice"; and Baje, pronounced, "beige," who declares, "I haven't met anyone more mean than me," though I wasn't sure she meant among her competitors or in the entire world. There has been drama, and there will be more. Possibly there will be love as well.

As a contest that combines infatuation with a famous person with the desire to serve her, it's somewhere between Flavor of Love and I Want to Work for Diddy. Because all the power belongs to Paris, the proper term for these aspiring BFFs is not friend but minion. Paris has claimed that the winner — the events of the show have already transpired in this, our real world — has actually become a friend and that she's socialized with all the rest of them.

But in the context of My New BFF, they are merely her pets and playthings.

Paris Hilton "Lap-dog" Bill Killed

Governornator Arnie tossed out the measure to crack down on a practice the bill's author says is distracting and dangerous: having a dog, cat or other animal in your lap when behind the wheel.

Celebrities including Jessica Simpson and Paris Hilton are among the motorists seen driving with pets in their laps.

Bill Maze, a Republican assemblyman, proposed the bill in April after seeing a woman driving with three dogs on her lap. It would have fined motorists caught sharing the driver's seat with an animal at least $35 (£19).

"If you've got a live animal, which you're not able to control, and that thing gets between you and the steering wheel or underneath your brake pedal, you've got a problem," Mr Maze said at the time.

The bill was one of scores of measures vetoed by Mr Schwarzenegger last week after a state budget was finally approved after a record 85-day impasse. The governor had over 800 bills to review in a matter of days.

He blamed the veto on the "historic delay" in passing the budget, saying he was only approving bills of the "highest priority for California" due to the curtailed signing period.

Other bills vetoed include a measure requiring pet stores to use humane methods to kill rodents.

The driving-with-animals bill was backed by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Los Angeles but ridiculed as the "Paris Hilton bill" by critics who described it as unwarranted interference by government.

A scantily-clad Paris Hilton has hit back at Republican presidential hopeful John McCain after he used the socialite's image to attack his Democratic rival Barack Obama.

In her own attack advert, which was paid for by the US comedy website Funny or Die, Hilton derided 71-year-old Mr McCain as being "a wrinkly, white-haired guy" from the "olden days", compared him with Star Wars' Yoda and the Golden Girls, and said he was "old enough to remember when dancing was a sin and beer was served in a bucket".

The 27-year-old model and actress also said she was "not promising change like that other guy", Mr Obama.

Kathy Hilton Pissed at John McCain for making fun of her daughter

McCain, the Republican presidential candidate, said last week that his campaign ad mocking Democrat Barack Obama with images of Hilton and singer Britney Spears was part of an attempt to inject humor into the presidential race.

On Sunday, Hilton's mother, Kathy Hilton, a McCain donor, registered her disapproval.

"It is a complete waste of the country's time and attention at the very moment when millions of people are losing their homes and their jobs," Kathy Hilton said in a short article posted on the liberal Huffington Post Web site. "And it is a completely frivolous way to choose the next president of the United States."

The ad plays on Obama's popularity by dismissing him as a mere celebrity, like Hilton and Spears. The Obama campaign has said the ad is proof that McCain would rather launch negative attacks than debate important issues.

McCain on Friday denied that his campaign had taken a negative turn, saying, "We think it's got a lot of humor in it, we're having fun and enjoying it."

Kathy Hilton, however, was unpersuaded, calling the ad "a complete waste of the money John McCain's contributors have donated to his campaign."

Kathy Hilton and her husband donated a total of $4,600 to McCain's campaign earlier this year.

Paris Hilton has once again fueled reports she's in a bitter battle for media attention with pal Nicole Richie, after she allegedly made plans to have a baby.

The socialite has admitted she would love to start a family with Good Charlotte rocker Benji Madden, the twin brother of Richie's boyfriend, Joel.

Richie gave birth to her first child, daughter Harlow, in January with Joel, and according to the New York Post, Hilton wants to try her hand in motherhood in an attempt to reclaim her spotlight.

A source tells the newspaper, "She's jealous of all the attention Nicole Richie has been getting and knows she's fallen off in the (tabloids) lately. A baby would put her back in the news."

The heiress quashed all the reports that had been circulating on the Internet by drinking and dining with her "BFFs" while filming her new MTV reality show, Paris Hilton's My New BFF , at Tao Las Vegas.

Paris, who was surrounded by girls vying for her attention, was interested in only one person, her boyfriend of nearly four months, Benji Madden, who she called as her "best boyfriend", reports People .

Paris Hilton and her boyfriend Benji Madden are facing legal action from a photographer in Los Angeles, after reportedly running over his foot with their car.

Paris and Benji left the city's exclusive Foxtail nightspot with her rocker beau on Thursday night by car, with Madden at the wheel.

The vehicle was surrounded by photographers vying for pictures of the couple, one snapper is heard screaming with pain as the car passed over his foot. Madden was seen climbing out of the vehicle and walking over to the paparazzo, but subsequently got back into the car and drove off.

But now, according to the website, the snapper has reportedly filed a hit and run complaint against the couple at the L.A. Sheriff's Department.

About 85,000 people are seeking a chance to become Paris Hilton's new sidekick on the hotel heiress's new reality television show, "I Wanna Be Paris' New Best Friend," People magazine reported Thursday.

Only 20 people out of the 85,000 will make it as finalists on the MTV show after being chosen by web surfers on the site ParisBFF.com.

The contestants will have to overcome a series of tests before Hilton decides who deserves to be the 27-year-old starlet's new BFF, or "best friend forever."

The show, which begins production in May, will be broadcast this year, People reported.

A darling of the tabloids, Hilton, the great-granddaughter of the Hilton hotel chain's founder, shot to fame in 2003 when her boyfriend leaked a video of their sexual escapades on the Internet.

She became a television star with the reality show "The Simple Life" alongside her real-life friend, Nicole Ritchie, in which the celebrity princesses lived at a country farm in a lifestyle neither would likely ever otherwise encounter.

Hilton has since appeared in films and made musical recordings.

Last year, she was jailed for 23 days for violating probation over an alcohol-related reckless driving conviction.

Barron Hilton given 3 years Probation for DUI

Paris Hilton’s younger brother Barron has been given three years' probation following his arrest for driving under the influence.

The 18-year-old pleaded no contest to charges of DUI and possessing a fake driver's licence during a hearing at a Los Angeles court.

He also had his licence suspended for a year and must pay $2,000 in fines and attend three alcohol education programmes.

Hilton was stopped by police in Malibu on February 12 and released on bail after spending a day behind bars.

Paris Hilton has been told to keep away from the opening of a new fashion store.

British designer Alexander McQueen doesn't want 'The Simple Life' star as a customer when he opens his stylish Los Angeles boutique next month.

McQueen said: "If she comes past the shop, hopefully she will just keep walking. I don't really covet that sort of thing. I'm not too fond of these openings, I find them quite superficial.

"The people who wear McQueen wear it because they want to wear it, not because it's the new thing in town."

If you haven't already heard, a new Paris has been hogging the tech headlines lately. While the Paris (Hilton) we know so well (and too well from her sex tape exploits) is apparently turning over a new leaf, this other Paris is a rumored upcoming smart phone from Sony Ericsson.

According to an article on USEB a.k.a. the Unofficial Sony Ericsson Blog, the new handset codenamed Paris is said to be a slim slider with a large touchscreen display. The back of the phone is metallic, while a sliding lens cover protects a 5-megapixel camera sensor. It will sport multifunctional QWERTY keys much like Sony Ericsson's P1i touchscreen smart phone, and features standard Bluetooth and 3G as well as onboard Wi-Fi and GPS. Paris will run on the Symbian UIQ 3.3 platform, with Mobile Opera 9.5 Web browser and Google Maps also preinstalled.

From the blurry image (supposedly captured from a video) posted, this Paris reminds us of the LG Chocolate with its touch-sensitive directional keypad, though it does seem slightly wider and features a round navigation control instead of a square one.

As expected, our Sony Ericsson contact in Asia gave us a "no comments on future products" response when contacted about the Paris. That said, with the source coming from USEB which has proven to be fairly accurate with upcoming Sony Ericsson product releases, we have a feeling we'll be hearing more of Paris sooner than you can say Hilton.

Oh! Of course - it would be a mind akin to that which is interested in the home-life of a flimsy-yellow-t-shirt-tearing-OAP, we suppose, and there seems to be a truly depressing amount of them. Does anyone remember when MTV had shows like Beavis and Butthead? What the fuck happened?

Perhaps Paris herself has had similar doubts about the contestant's mental states, which is why she is point-blank refusing to meet the maniacs. It all depends on whether you consider her capable of such foresight.

It’s also further proof behind her theory that her independence is growing as each day passes. Not so long ago, if she’d have wanted a new BFF, she’d have just asked daddy for one. But now, because of the frenzied attention we’ve all been giving her and the money and fame she’s managed to extract from it, she is able to get a television company to bend over backwards and find her a friend instead! Oh, what a life she has!

The other route for Paris to take on her quest to find a BFF would be the path us normal folk are most used to, that of ‘trying, over a number of years - perhaps a lifetime - to be a good, nice, friendly person to someone else’. But we don’t understand what it’s like to have such power and, until we do, our suggestions are without experience or worth.

Paris Hilton the Shoe whore comes to Canada

Paris Hilton swept into Montreal on Saturday to meet her fans and sell some shoes.

Hundreds of people lined up on a Ste-Catherine Street sidewalk for as long as seven hours to check out Hilton's new footwear line.

"I'm so excited to be in Montreal again, I love Canada," Hilton told the horde of photographers and fans crammed into the back of the downtown Browns Shoes store.

"It's an honour to have my shoe line here. I'm very excited and I'm excited to see all my fans - I saw there's so many people outside."

Flashbulbs lit up the room as Hilton blew kisses, struck poses and showed off a pair of grey high heels from her collection.

Fans shouted "I love you Paris" to the socialite as she strutted around a small stage.

"I love you all, thank you so much for coming, this is so exciting, and go buy my shoes," she said.

Paris in My Name is Earl

Earl Hickey (Jason Lee) found out that Paris Hilton is the girl of his dreams. "My Name is Earl" brought aboard the celebrity socialite for a dream sequence in the show's return Thursday night.

In the episode -- the first for "Earl" since the end of the Hollywood writers strike in February -- Earl finds himself flat in the middle of a road with Alyssa Milano's character, Billie. After the two are knocked out cold by a car, Earl's imagination runs wild -- and Hilton is in it.

Paris Hilton's body guard roughs up Finnish photographer

A bodyguard working for Paris Hilton, a US hotel heiress and socialite, threw a Finnish Lehtikuva photographer against a car at Helsinki-Vantaa airport on Thursday, tabloid Ilta-Sanomat reported on its website.

Ms Hilton flew into Finland from Estonia with her boyfriend Benji Madden, the guitarist of US pop rock band Good Charlotte, and was met by a number of fans at the airport.

According to Ilta-Sanomat, one of Ms Hilton's bodyguards used force against the photographer as the couple stepped into a vehicle.

The photographer in question told the Finnish News Agency (STT) that such incidents were not uncommon when celebrities were accompanied by bodyguards.

According to a survey by Los Angeles-based E-Poll Market Research, the hotel heiress has beaten Britney Spears and party girl Lindsay Lohan to the top of the list.

The survey, reported by Forbes magazine, noticed that the media exposure keeps such stars among the ranks of top celebrities even when their movie, TV, or recording work is unnoticeable.

Forbes has given the example of Pamela Anderson, who has landed the fourth spot in the list.

Harvard Lampoon takes another shot at Paris

PARIS HILTON has been on virtually every other magazine cover, so why not National Geographic?

It's the Harvard Lampoon's April Fool's spoof of the venerable nature mag, which hit stands yesterday.

The folks at the Lampoon even persuaded NG employees to help with the parody, which includes a satire on Mongolia's wildest waterparks and "Native Girls Gone Wild."

"My guess was they were just extremely bored and they were tired of working with animals and scientists and wanted to hang out with college students," said Hayes Davenport (now there's a Harvard name), who edited the magazine with fellow senior Ross Arbes.

Davenport said that other publications have helped with their parodies in the past, such as when USA Today printed the Lampoon's version on its press in 1989. National Geographic not only helped print the parody and distribute it, Arbes said, but also a designer helped lay out the mag to make it look as much like the original as possible.

"They provided things that were really valuable to us," Arbes said.

In one jab at National Geographic's staid image, the Lampoon created three new editions to help keep the magazine relevant for younger generations, and features Hilton in a "Your Wildest Animal Fantasies" story.

Of course, the Lampoon's version offers a send-up to anthropological nudity. A photo of a lion is actually made up of dozens of images of women's bare chests.

Private Paris Hilton pictures Leaked in Facebook security problem

A security lapse on Facebook has allowed its users to gain access to vast libraries of private photographs, including one of Paris Hilton drinking beer with her friends.

A Canadian hacker exploited a recent upgrade to the networking site's privacy settings to view pictures that were intended to be private, including some of Paris Hilton partying with her brother, Barron Nicholas, at the recent Emmy awards.

Facebook was told about the problem yesterday afternoon, and said it had since fixed the bug.

Byron Ng, a computer technician from Vancouver, began looking for flaws in the site's security after an upgrade last week purportedly gave Facebook's 40 million users greater control over the way they shared material such as photographs with their friends.

Mr Ng found that he was able to pull up recent pictures posted by Facebook users, even if the owners intended them only to be seen by a select group of friends.

In a subsequent test, the Associated Press reported that it was able to access several private albums, including one posted by Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook's founder, in November 2005.

The breach comes on the same day that children's charities urged ministers to ban companies from trawling websites such as Facebook to gain access about potential employees, in a process known as "digital dirt-digging".

Record numbers of people are posting intimate details about their lives online, despite warnings from privacy campaigners that photographs are extremely difficult to erase once uploaded to the internet.

The Information Commissioner's Office recently reiterated its warning about the risk of posting details on social networking sites after a study found that the amount of information stored about us on the web will grow by a factor of ten between now and 2011.

In a statement acknowledging the security flaw, a Facebook spokesman said: "We take privacy very seriously and continue to make enhancements to the site.”

In June last year, Facebook was forced to update its privacy settings after it was revealed that certain information about users - such as their sexual preference and religious beliefs - could be ascertained by searching the site.

It didn't take long for Paris Hilton to organize a VIP party for herself in Johannesburg this weekend hot on the heels of her goodwill school tour earlier in the week.
